ANTICIPATE THE TOPIC


CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION
A.    Background of the Study
Language is very important in human life. We are able to communicate with other people that use language, not only it but also we are able to express our thought, our feeling and our experiences through language. There are many language in the world so, there are many countries have different language. We are able to communicate with other people in the world that use international language.
English is a foreign language, especially in Indonesia. We learn English from elementary school till university. There are for skills in English learning should be able to mastery, those are: 1) listening 2) speaking 3) writing and 4) reading. Moreover if we see there are many people are not enough well to listening.
Listening is the ability to accurately receive and interpret messages in the communication process. Listening is key to all effective communication, without the ability to listen effectively messages are easily misunderstood communication breaks down and the sender of the message can easily become frustrated or irritated.
Then, Listening to the film or song may be easier to understand than listening section in TOEFL which is only heard at once. Many who take the TOEFL do not get the score that they are entitled to because they spend too much time dwelling on hard questions, leaving insufficient time to answer the easy questions they can get right.
Furthermore,The listening section is designed to mimic natural speech. This means that the speakers will pause, change sentences or topics abruptly, and occasionally say something incorrect or forget what they were talking about. People may be asked questions about these imperfections, so a familiarity with unrehearsed speech is essential to doing well in the listening section. Hence, the strategy and skill to answer in this section need to be mastered by all student wanting to get good score.

B.     PROBLEM of FORMULATION
1.      What is anticipate the topic?
2.      What is the strategy for part B?
3.      How to try to guess the topic?

C.    THE BENEFIT of STUDY
1.      The students can know what anticipate the topic is.
2.      The students can know the strategy for part B
3.      The students can know how to try to guess the topic,















CHAPTER II
DISCUSSION

A.    SKILL 1: ANTICIPATE THE TOPICS
It is very helpful to your overall comprehension if you know what topics to expect in listening Part B. you should therefor try to anticipate the topics you will be hearing. For example, are the conversations about some aspect of school life, or some type of social issue, or a trip someone is planning? A helpful strategy is therefore to look briefly at the answers in the test book, before you actually hear the conversations in the recording program, and try to determine the topics of the conversations that you will hear.
Example:
On the recording, you hear:
            (narrator)         :listen to the conversation between two students.
(man)               :what did you think of that history exam?
(woman)          :that was the hardest exam I’ve ever seen.
(man)               :and it wasn’t just hard! It was long, too.
You think:
The topic of conversation is a very long and difficult history exam,[1]
B.     STRATEGY for PART B
There are some strategies to answer the questions in the Part B :
1.      As you listen, follow along with the answers in the test book and try to figure out the correct answer.
2.      If you are not sure about an answer, make your guess. Don’t leave any answers blank.
3.      Use any remaining time to look ahead at the answers to the next questions.

C.     TRY to GUESS THE TOPIC
In the view second before the conversations starts, look quickly at the answer choices.
1.      Look at the words and expressions and try to guess what the topic will be.
2.      Look at the groups of answer choices to try to guess what the question will be. Then, you will be ready to listen for the answers.[2]

D.    EXERCISE

there are some questions from two converations :

1.      What is the woman plan to do this Saturday?
a.       attend a football game alone.
b.      go to a sporting event.
c.       eat in the cafetaria and study.
d.      see a play.
The answer is B “go to a sporting event
2.      Why does the man want to go to the football game?
a.       It’s the final game of the season.
b.      It’s better than the drama department’s play.
c.       It’s a very important game.
d.      It’s close to the cafetaria.  
The answer is C “it’s very important game”

3.      What is the same times in the music department concert?
a.       a play
b.      A game.
c.       a study group meeting
d.      dinner in the cafetaria
The answer is A “a play”

4.      When does the man plan to study?
a.       Saturday night
b.      after dinner in the cafetaria.
c.       Sunday afternoon
d.      maybe next weekend.
The answer is B “After dinner in the cafetaria”

5.      What are the man the girl discussing?
a.       trash orbiting Earth.
b.      a trip by an astronaut to the moon.
c.       the overabundance of garbage on Earth.\
d.      becoming space scientist.
The answer is a “trash orbiting earth”

6.      Where did the woman learn about this problem?
a.       from a lecture.
b.      in a magazine article.
c.       in a book.
d.      on a television program.
The answer is D “on a television program”.



7.      Approximately, how much metal is in orbit in space?
a.       17,000 pounds
b.      3,000 tons
c.       3,000 pounds
d.      300 tons
The answer is B “3,000 tons”

8.      What does the woman hope will happen
a.       she will be able to travel in space.
b.      the problem will take care of itself.
c.       scientists will find solutions to the problem
d.      the junk will fall to Earth.
The answer is C “scientists will find solutions to the problem.[3]

in the section , you have learned the strategy for listening comprehension section, part B: Try to guess what the topic will be, try to guess what question will be, get the main idea from the first sentence or two, listen for the answer in order, then, stay calm and try don’t to lose your focus.
