CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
LISTENING RESTATEMENT
A.
Background
Listening is the basis for the
development of all other skills and the main channel through which the student
makes initial contact with the target language and its culture. Through active
listening, students acquire vocabulary and syntax, as well as better
pronunciation, accent and intonation.
Though listening skill is very important, for some language learners it
is considered to be the most difficult language skill.
Communication happens if there
is an interaction between the speaker and the listener. Therefore, listening
comprehension activities have a direct and important relationship to the amount
and quality of speaking skill. Successful listening for language learners depends
on many factors such as the knowledge of the language, background knowledge,
etc.
There are three parts in the
listening of the TOEFL test:
1.
Part A consists of thirty short
conversations, each followed by a question. You must choose the best answer to
each question from the four choices in your test book.
2.
Part B consists of two longer
conversation, each followed by a number of question. You must choose the best
answer to each question from the four choices in your test book.
3.
Part C consists of three talks, each
followed by a number of questions. You must choose the best answer to each
question from the four choices in your test book.
B.
Indicators
Through this
material, the students are expected to be able to:
a.
What the definition of restatement?
b.
What the strategy to answer the
quistion about restatement?
CHAPTER

DISCUSSION
A.
Skill Restatement
Restatement is a
repeating or rephrasing of the content or meaning of the listener statement (s)
that typically contains the same meaning but different pronunciation and
sentences is usually clearer and more concrete than the listener statement. Often
the correct answer in listening part A is an answer that contains a restatement
of the ideas in the second line of the conversation
From that statement outhors make conclussion that: when you want to
answer TOEFL listening test usually the correct answers in the short
conversiations, if you want
choose the best answer you must focus on the second line of the conversation.
You must found statement that similar meaning but different sentence or it can be called with synonyms. You should definitely avoid the answers that contain words with similar
sounds, but very different meanings from what you hear on the recording.
For Example
On the recording, you hear:
(
woman ) : Steve, is something the
matter? You don’t look very good.
(
man ) : Oh, I am feeling a
little sick today.
(
narrator ) : What does the man mean?
A. He
is not very good looking.
B. He
is a bit ill.
C. He
looks worse than he feels.
D. His
feet are a little thick
The best answer is B, because in
this conversation, sick means ill, and a little means a bit. Restates the idea
in the second line of the dialogue. Please note that answer D is definitely not
a correct answer because it contains feet instead of feel and thick instead of
sick. These words are similar in sound but not in meaning to the words that you
hear on the recording.
B.
The
Best Strategy Choose Answer With Restatement
·
As you listen to the second line of the conversation, you
should focus on the key idea(s) in that line.
·
If you see a restatement of the key idea (s) in a particular
answer, then you have probably found the correct answer.
·
Do not choose answers with words that sound similar to the
words on the recording.
From those
statements outhors make conclussion stategy avoid similar sound like:
1. Find the key word from the second line of the conversation
and you should
focus on the key idea (s) in that line.
2. If you found a restatement of the
key idea (s) in a particular answer and if you get problem to found the correct
answer, please you must focus in the second line of conversation.
3.
Please
do not choose the answer with words that sound similar but
you must choose the best answer with similar meaning or synonyms.
